For anyone who has ever considered trying a triathlon, entry to the Rother Valley Triathlon Festival now includes six free training sessions from the British Triathlon Federation.

On 12-13 June 2010 Rother Valley Country Park will host the 3rd annual Triathlon Festival.  The event aims to offer people of all ages and abilities the opportunity to try Britain’s fastest growing participation sport.

Triathlon involves swimming, cycling, and running - done consecutively in that order with little or no rest between each discipline.

The Rother Valley festival caters for triathletes of all levels, with short distances offered to appeal to the whole family and the British Triathlon Federation has agreed to organise six free training days at Rother Valley Country Park, between January and May.  These training days will be held on:

Saturday 30th January -- Saturday 27th February -- Saturday 27th March

Saturday 24th April -- Saturday 22nd May -- Sunday 23rd May

Training will focus on the basics of what is required at the event, explaining swimming techniques, the transition between each discipline and much more. Anyone entering one of the festival events as a newcomer to triathlon can attend the training days free of charge.

The triathlon festival will feature a children's triathlon for kids aged 9 to 14, with three different distances on offer depending on age group. There's a women's Super Sprint event, which is a 200 meter swim, 10km cycle ride around the country park and a 4km run. There's also a Sprint race for men and women (750m swim, 25.4km cycle, 5km run) and a Paratriathlon event specifically for disabled athletes.

Rebecca Rowley - Regional Programme Manager commented: "British Triathlon is looking forward to working with the event organsiers, One Step Beyond Promotions, to make the 2010 Rother Valley festival the best yet!

"We believe there should be no barriers to participation in triathlon, anyone can have a go regardless of age, fitness level, or ability. That’s why we want to encourage as many people as possible to take advantage of the free training days."

British Triathlon is the National Governing Body for Triathlon. It helped over 100,000 people take part in the sport this year, and helped Yorkshire's 21 year old Alistair Brownlee win the World Championship title. Make triathlon your new year’s goal, and there’s help on hand to make your first triathlon a success!

A new sportive event has been added to the cycling calendar to coincide with the 2010 British Road Racing Championship. The National Cyclo-Sportive will take place in Lancashire on Saturday 25 June and will share some of the same challenging route that Britain’s best riders will cover one day later.

The National Cyclo-Sportive will replace the existing Pendle Pedal event and will start and finish in Barley village beside Pendle Hill - the same place as the National Championships. Riders will get to ride under the same start/finish gantry before heading out onto some of the most beautiful and traffic-free roads in England and the same ones the pros will ride on the Sunday.

Lancashire's Ian Wilkinson, who is a former national mountain bike champion and has enjoyed considerable success on the road this year with the Halfords Bike Hut Team, and who will be racing for the new Endura team next year, will be riding.

He said: "The possibility of winning a national title on my home roads is really motivating. 2009 has been a breakthrough year for me and the prospect of racing the National Championships in Lancashire is really exciting. I will also plan to ride part of the National Cyclo-Sportive as my warm up. It's a stunning route and I look forward to riding it with hundreds of other cyclists."

The National Cyclo-Sportive will feature many of the famous climbs previously tackled by pro riders on the Tour of Britain, Kellogg's Tour and Tour of Lancashire races, over Waddington Fell, Tatham Fell, Bowland Knotts, The Trough of Bowland and the Nick of Pendle. The main route is 100miles long, with a 60mile option also available.
It will be a fully supported ride, with four free feed stations, extensive route marshalling and signage, bike mechanics and sweep vehicles and chip timing.

For those staying on to watch the best British pro riders on the Sunday, it is also expected to be the only UK racing appearance of the new Sky Pro team.

The weekend will feature a full entertainment and visitor programme, with accommodation packages for visitors to the region. The entry fee for the National Cyclo-Sportive will be £25 or £90 for a team of 4.

Entries will open on 11th January on http://www.pennineevents.co.uk.

The Sportive climbs up from Barley beside the imposing figure of Pendle Hill before speeding down through Downham, a setting for many period TV dramas.

This picturesque village with no overhead cables is a throwback to a bygone era. Areas of the Ribble Valley hidden off the main roads are often likened to parts of Tuscany, perhaps without the vineyards, with their beautiful isolated farms and houses, wooded glades, and rolling countryside.

There are also big climbs and Pendle Pedal takes them all in: first Waddington Fell, then Tatham Fell are tackled. Nowhere else in England can you ascend for several miles with nothing much around you except stunning views, and the silence broken only by the riders' exertions Cars are infrequent interruptions.

After a loop around the Lune Valley, the riders then take on the real big ones: the Trough of Bowland, where riders might think that they were in the Scottish Highlands; and the Nick O’Pendle, the big daddy of cycling climbs.  By the time they've reached the finish, the riders have climbed over 3,500 metres.

The National Sportive and National Road Race Championships are just two of the events which make up the Pendle Cycle Fest. Other events include the Colne Grand Prix (part of the National Elite Series), the Pendle Cycle Show and a series of easy-paced guided rides. It is organised by Pennine Events and Pendle Borough Council, with British Cycling President Brian Cookson, playing a key role.

The 24 hour static cycling world record is set to come under threat today (11th December). Tom Newman from Fulham is aiming to surpass the record of 722.383 km (448.76 miles) on a Wattbike set by RAAM cyclist, Jim Rees at the Cycle Show in October.

Newman’s main motivation is raising money for the Princess Alice Hospice, but the 25 year old athlete has ensured that he will be spurred along to break the record by inviting friends to pay for 30 and 60 minute slots to ride alongside him. He has hired two Wattbikes for the challenge at the Horsley Sports Club in Surrey where he will start his marathon ride at 3pm.

He said: “I think one of the toughest things will be keeping going throughout the night. I’ve sold slots to make sure I’m not riding on my own!”

He also has a live band, party and festive cakes to help him along and has put up a cash prize for the winner of a Wattbike peak power test, which involves cycling as hard as possible for six seconds to record a power score. The current record is 2159Watts, a score that comes close to those achieved by the likes of Sir Chris Hoy!

Newman continued: “I’m hoping to break the 24 hour record. I did a bucket-load of miles in 12 hours when I tested myself out a few weeks ago. This isn’t my main focus for training, but it’s something I decided to do at the start of the year and I intend to enjoy myself. I had originally planned to do it outdoors in the summer on a 20mile loop but I was involved in an accident where I fractured my skull and most of my season was written off.

Newman, who competes for Pro-Vo2, has taken part in numerous Ironman events and represented Great Britain at the World Long Distance Championships in Prague last year.
He added: “This challenge is really good training for me and I really like the Wattbike. It’s a great way to build power and work on specific programmes. It’s the first bike I think that really does this, particularly as I hate turbo training!”

Specialist sports’ clinic puts its best foot forward

CircleBath Hospital has confirmed that it will be an official sponsor of 2010 Bath Half Marathon, an event which attracts around 15,000 participants from all over the country.   The hospital, which will run a dedicated sports clinic staffed by sports medicine specialists, has pledged its support for the renowned event for the second year running.

Taking place on 7 March 2010, the Bath Half Marathon is the single largest charity fundraising event in the South West, and in 2009 it raised more than £1.2million for local and national charities.  Last year CircleBath fielded its own team of 15 runners; this year it expects to more than double that number. More than 60 new partners will begin working at the hospital when it opens in February next year.

Leading South West knee surgeon and Circle partner Neil Bradbury, who regularly treats professional and amateur athletes, confirmed the partnership’s commitment:

“The Bath Half Marathon is a local institution and we’re extremely pleased to be part of it. Integrating sport and fitness into everyday life has extremely positive health benefits and we believe it’s important that, as a local hospital, we get involved when people are at the peak of health as well as when they are unwell or suffering from an ailment.”

“Our team of sports therapists will be offering training tips and preventative exercises for participants on our website www.circlebath.co.uk, and we are currently looking at other ways the partnership can help to ensure they are in top form come March next year.”

Andrew Taylor, Race Director at Running High, said: “We are extremely pleased to welcome back CircleBath as a race sponsor.  With the hospital’s own focus on health and wellness, there is a natural fit with the half marathon, particularly as around 25 per cent of participants originate from Bath and the surrounding villages.”

When open CircleBath, which will treat both private and NHS patients, will offer a range of elective surgeries and services including physiotherapy.  The facility includes 28 well equipped patient rooms, many overlooking Shoscombe Vale, four operating theatres, dedicated suites for ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat), Ophthalmology, Urodynamics and Endoscopy, an MRI scanner and state-of-the-art X-ray and mammography machine.

Just a month since launching, the Outlaw Triathlon is two thirds full and shaping up to be the UK’s premier long distance triathlon. Organisers, One Step Beyond, have now confirmed the event start time, swim and run courses for the event taking place in Nottingham on 8th August 2010.

The bike course has also been approved by Nottinghamshire’s highway bosses, and will be released prior to Christmas subject to contracts being confirmed with the preferred traffic management company.

The event will commence with a dramatic mass swim start at 6am. Organiser, Iain Hamilton, commented: “We’ve opted for a mass start, using the full width of Holme Pierrepont Lake. It will provide a fabulous spectacle to start the day just as the sun comes up.”

Athletes will have two hours in which to complete the 2.4mile swim and ready themselves for 112miles of cycling around the stunning Nottinghamshire countryside. The cut off for the bike will be after 10½ hours, meaning that all athletes will need to be off the bike course by 4.30pm.

Transition time will be allowed on top of the cut off times, as long as the final time limit of 17 hours is achieved. This will ensure that all Outlaw Triathletes are available for the 11pm celebrations and party.

The run course will be a three-lap route out and back from Holme Pierrepont to a turn around point on the south bank of the River Trent. Athletes will pass the Nottingham Forest Football Ground, go under Trent Bridge and turn around at County Hall, the home of Nottinghamshire County Council. The whole embankment area will be alive with spectators and visitors to Nottingham’s Riverside Festival.

Outlaws-in-training can now also order limited edition clothing, including high quality designer t-shirts, technical kit, hoodies and beanie hats.

Hamilton added: “The Outlaw is really taking shape now and there’s genuine excitement amongst our partners, particularly following the rush of entries received in the first week of launching. We are aware of the level of interest in this event and will have more announcements to follow this one in the coming weeks.

“We anticipate the event selling out by early January, if not sooner, and so would urge those interested in entering to do so now to avoid being disappointed. For those who have entered, we’ve put together a unique clothing range of high quality training and leisure wear.”
