Great Notts Bike Ride

Great Notts Bike Ride sees over 4000 Get on their Bikes

Sunday (22nd June) saw the 27th annual Great Nottinghamshire Bike Ride take place at the National Water Sports Centre, Holme Pierrepont. Over 4000 men, women, children and even some super heroes took part in the event, which was sponsored by Boots and organised by Nottinghamshire County Council.

Councillor Steve Carroll, Cabinet Member for Culture and Regeneration at the County Council said: “I would like to say a big thank you to all those who took part in the Bike Ride – it was a great day and I’m looking forward to being able to share with you how much we raised once all the sponsorship has been collected.

“I would also like to extend the County Council’s thanks to all those who helped organise the ride particularly the marshals who gave up their time to help out, our sponsors; Boots, our corporate challenge partners; Freeth Cartwright, the five charities, the Big Wheel, Land Rover and our media partners.”

Riders were helped around the family lap challenge, 18, 50 and 100mile routes by 350 volunteer marshals, 5 fully trained mechanics, 6000 Boots sports drinks, 6000 Boots energy bars and home made cakes at one of the six official refreshment stations along the routes.

The traditional 50mile route attracted the highest number of riders, with 2200 in total starting the event, and taking 40minutes to roll across the start line at Holme Pierrepont. A further 1600, including many young children, did the 18mile route. 275 people started the new sportive route, braving gusts of wind that were reported to be up to 70mph.

Some riders came in fancy dress, dressed up as various super heroes. Good spirits were maintained by the great live entertainment, food and drinks at the finish.

Money was being raised for  five charities; Marie Curie Cancer Care, When You Wish Upon A Star, Geoff Thomas Foundation, Cerebral Palsy Sport and Rainbow Children’s Hospice.. Local businesses also took part in the Freeth Cartright Corporate Challenge where the winning business will be decided on the basis of total sponsorship raised.

To mark their sponsorship of the event, a team of Boots senior executive directors rode the 18 mile route. Elizabeth Fagan commented:  ‘This was my first time at the event and it was fantastic to see so many friends, families and serious cyclists enjoying the day. Like many others, my team found it hard going in the strong wind but I felt great at the finish and still feel fantastic today for having taken part. Congratulations to everyone who completed the ride and let’s look to an even bigger and better event next year.’

From next week ride times will also be available online via the event web site http://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/bikeride
