24-seven

24-Seven Challenge

Beverley MacKenzie, Challenge Events Manager at CLIC Sargent and Simon Kendrick whose 19-month old son has been diagnosed with cancer, joined Annabel Croft to demonstrate some of the challenges involved in 24seven.

Taking place in the Forest of Dean in October, 24seven offers challenge enthusiasts a unique opportunity to undertake a series of seven gruelling physical and mental challenges over a period of 24 hours. Everyone competing in 24seven will cover a marathon distance (26 miles) on foot, by bike and using a canoe during the 24 hours. On top of these physical challenges they’ll also be set memory tests and a series of mental challenges to unravel.

Annabel said: “As a supporter of CLIC Sargent and a keen sportswoman, I was thrilled to be asked to support 24seven. It’s an amazing event that anyone can participate in individually, or in a team of three. CLIC Sargent are hoping to attract participants who thrive on challenges, 24seven is designed to really test your endurance, visual awareness and patience. Everyone taking part will have a truly unforgettable experience that will push them to the limit both physically and mentally.”

CLIC Sargent is the UK’s leading children’s cancer charity and has helped thousands of children and their families cope with their cancer journeys. Simon’s son, Ben Kendrick, is one of the children - at 15 months old Ben was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a cancer of the nerve cells.

“For the first few weeks after Ben’s diagnosis, my wife and I felt physically sick with worry – we just fell apart. It was particularly hard because Ben was initially given a 50:50 chance of survival. Further tests revealed he had, in fact, an 80% chance of surviving. That’s still a life threatening situation but at least the odds were more in our favour”, says Simon.

Ben is halfway through his chemotherapy treatment at the Leicester Royal Infirmary and has another six months to go. Simon says seeing his small son have to endure this treatment, which has caused Ben to develop ulcers in his mouth, lose weight, lose his hair and requires the use of a catheter to empty his bladder, means he had no qualms about running the London Marathon earlier this year and getting involved in 24seven.

“As the father of a child with cancer I know first hand how much help you need to get through the days,” explained Simon. “I decided to support CLIC Sargent because of the fantastic work the charity does to help families in so many ways. I’d encourage anyone who enjoys a bit of a challenge to sign up to the event – not only do you get to support a very valuable cause but you can have fun at the same time!”
